New portfolio on line

As a qualified member of the British Institute of Professional Photographers I am able to upload a small portfolio to their website, which you can view here. So I have had some fun editing images for this.

Red roses - actually they are roses from Valentine’s Day, which I then photographed against a red background. Very romantic I hear you cry!

A moving time …

I am in the midst of a office move at the moment, and it feels as though I have been packing and unpacking boxes forever, which isn’t true. I figure it’s a good time of the year to do this as the weather is so unpredictable. I’m still hoping for some snow, or a heavy frost, but I noticed the other day the daffodils were starting to flower, signaling the arrival of a new season, so I may have to save those picture ideas for another time.

I love my new space, it’s in a listed building which started life as a flour mill, and now houses a number of artists studios (including mine) and other creative businesses.

The best bit is that although it is on the edge of large town, it is also close to the country side and I will be able to shoot subjects close to home. Already I can see photographs that need to be taken. The views from the windows are great - very scenic, and when the light is right I won’t be in the studio much.

Shortly I will be leaving for a trip to Paris, traveling by train (Eurostar) - a first for me. Spring time in Paris is supposed to be the best. I’ll get back to you on that one! Usually when I travel to a place for the first time - photographically speaking that is, I like to just go and absorb. I have a skeleton shoot list in my head, but for this trip I want to just observe life and capture those moments in time that scream “I’m in Paris”.

Venetian building reflecting in the canal. It was a bright sunny (and cold) January day and this building was catching a lot of sun. The building was not stunning compared to some of them I’d seen, but what caught my eye was the reflection in the Canal. I love the fact it is so abstract and the contrast of colours.

Gondola’s & Venice

Venice is one of those places that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. I chose to visit in winter to avoid the crowds, and was rewarded with wonderful weather. It is lovely just to wander around Venice, and you never seem far away from signs directing you St Marks Square, or the Rialto Bridge. Well that is until I decided to visit one of the smaller islands, Burano, and managed to get off at the wrong stop on the return journey. That was one long walk!

As you can imagine I took many photographs during my trip, the shot above of Gondola’s resting on the Grand Canal is my favourite. I chose a slow shutter speed, so that there would be a sense of the Gondola’s bobbing away, against the backdrop of the colourful buildings across the water. Of course what the picture can’t tell you is how cold I was kneeling so close to the water as the wind tried to blow my hat off!
