Craft Trade Fair & Photography

I think the title of my blog is rather apt at present. I do seem to be waiting for the light or rather waiting for the light and a free moment to coincide so I can actually do some photography!

Still progress is being made - my new studio now has pictures on the wall, and I am busy preparing for a trade show next week - The British Craft Trade Fair at the Great Yorkshire Showground, 3-4-5 April. It’s always hard to know how best to present everything I have to offer to the world, so the printer is working over time as I implement ideas for signage. I was a new exhibitor last year, and it was tremendous fun.

It’s a lovely Trade Fair to do, as it brings together over 500 artists and makers, and you really get to see some fantastic stuff. I guess that’s why the buyers like it too, as they get to spot the latest trends, new talents and source innovative giftware and accessories. They find something a little different there.

Anyway I shall be on stand 105 if anyone wants to drop by and say hello.

5 suggestions for photographing your Spring garden

  1. Wait for the softer light – this could be early in the morning or in the late afternoon or evening depending on which direction your garden faces.
  2. Hyacinths and daffodils have wonderful colours and make great subjects for spring photography.
  3. Don’t be afraid to get down low to get the best angles. Most photographs are taken from five feet above the ground, crouch down to get a different perspective on your garden.
  4. Choose a day with no wind unless you’re actively after quivering Monet-like blurry shots!
  5. Sunshine and showers can produce wonderful back-lit photos and droplets on leaves add another dimension to your subject.

Above all and have some fun experimenting with your shots. If you take something you love then don’t hide it in a drawer, print it out and get it framed.
