Photography life …

Drove down to Twickenham to watch the Rugby International on Saturday. Great fun! Even managed to avoid all the traffic.

Sunday I returned to Brighton to have a nose around the Brighton Art Fair. I had applied to exhibit at the Brighton Art Fair this year, but had not been successful. So I was visiting with ‘potential exhibitor eyes’.

I found the Brighton Art Fair quite interesting - a lot of abstract art, which rarely ’speaks to me’, and a few other styles - some of which I liked others I could take or leave. It was busy, but the aisles were narrow too making viewing at a distance nearly impossible.

That is once I’d found it, sadly it was hardly signposted at all, and I struggled. Asking in shops and pubs even with the road name, yielded blank looks. That must have affected visitor numbers.

Ironically it appears to be in quite a busy part of the town too, with people walking past unaware that an Art show was going on.

Having a cup of tea I noticed that the criteria for entering insists that work must be original. Fair enough. Giclee (inkjet prints) or offset litho prints cannot be sold. Quite how they police that I’m not sure, and neither am I sure why they object to them. Afterall I can produce cibachromes as easily as giclee prints.

Still I am not going to worry about it - it’s not the venue for me.

Brighton again

Yesterday was my turn to help manning the RAG artists exhibition at the Start Gallery, Church Street Brighton. I was torn between driving or catching the train, given snow was forecast. I drove, and true to form the M25 was slow and I only just made it in time.

In between customers it was good to chat to the other artist’s about there experiences selling their work, and what works for them. Sadly there does not seem to be a magic formula that works for us all.

Brighton Art fair starts today, and the Start Gallery is literally a stone’s throw from that venue, and yesterday being set up day meant an endless stream of people walking up the hill clutching ladders looking very focused on the task in hand. A few popped in to see what we were up to. In fact I hear that this is one of the down sides of Brighton having such a vibrant artistic community - everyone goes to see what everyone else is up to!

Anyway I shall be back on Sunday, so see how sales have gone. And to visit the Brighton Art Fair myself !

Brighton, Art & Me

Well yesterday was my day out in Brighton - dropping off work at the Start Contemporary Gallery in Church Street for the RAG Artist’s exhibition which starts on Wednesday and runs for two weeks to coincide with the Brighton Art Fair. All did not go well - the one way system had me utterly confused and lost within minutes.

When I did find the Gallery I was just so happy I was all of a fluster. The group exhibition includes, four of my limited edition photographs on canvas, handmade greeting cards, my 2006 calendar and some unframed prints. So hopefully there is something for all price ranges there.

I am helping to mind the gallery one day, so I hope I can find it again! So fingers crossed the exhibition attracts lots of visitors as it is very close location wise to the Brighton Art Fair which does attract thousands of visitors.

Just off to Dublin …

Courtesy of cheap flights, and living close to a London Airport, I popped over to Dublin for the day with a friend yesterday.

I think the pilot was a boy racer at heart because we seemed to do a lot of cornering, and the landing was so fast, even I was braking. Heading into the City, my friend remembered how awful the traffic was - and it was, but that didn’t bother the bus driver - he knew how to play it.

Leaping off the Airport Express bus with everyone else seemed like a smart idea - except we had no idea where we were on the map. Sharp left into the tourist information to get ourselves orientated and we were back out again clutching bus tickets for the hop on, hop off City Sightseeing tour. Except we didn’t hop off at all, until we had done all 22 stops. Then we had lunch, and joined the tour again, hopping off at our previously researched points of interest. All the drivers were characters - the stories, the songs, we had a great laugh. The weather was good too.

I even managed to fit in some photography! But sadly no Guinness.

The photographer has wet feet … again!

I think I grew webbed feet in Scotland. The weather was wet - although this led to new picture opportunities it was hard work. On the one hand - through the mist you could see great shots, but never had the right light for them, so they remain on the wish list, and on the other hand I was taking details shots that the rain had made a little more interesting.

On one occasion I spent 5 hours at a location, because the light changed so fast. Bright sunshine, dark clouds and rainbows were delivered along with rain, and low dull cloud. It was dramatic at times, but fleeting. I really was waiting for the light that day.
