Fab weather in Rome, meant long shadows from the people below, which gives a different look to the shot.

Personal Reflections

I am subscribed to a number of newsletters or ezines, whatever you care to call them, and sometimes I store them all up in a folder and read them in one hit. I just did this and realised how many had a personal reflections section, which I enjoy reading. So here are some of mine:

At the moment I am going dizzy editing photographs taken at various travel destinations over the last year, and at the same time noting down new ideas for images I’d like to create. Then I drop into one of the discussion forums to read that it’s all doom and gloom - the micro stock agencies are changing the stock industry forever and no one really knows how to react to that. Some want to ignore it, others don’t. Others are joining up, whilst others are retiring. Some say travel photography is dead, others say not.

All very confusing, and to be honest I don’t know how the story will end either. I suspect we are just in a period of the cycle where there is a lot happening - as one guy pointed out the industry has experienced this before - when 35mm camera’s became affordable to the masses for example. Ho hum!

At the moment I’m using both the micro stock and Corbis/Getty sites to inspire my creative thinking. I’m also looking at magazines to see what is actually selling. All of which goes into the melting pot, as I try and figure out how to do it ‘my way’ and a way that’s different from what has been done.

Then when I’ve got the final image, I don’t know whether to mark is licensed or Royalty Free - but that’s a whole other debate.

Colosseum, Rome

Just returned from a trip to Rome. Before I went I had a look around for pictures of Rome, to try and get some inspiration on what to shoot whilst away. And once there I can usually be found checking out the postcards stands for more inspiration.

Obviously the Colosseum is a popular subject, and photographed many times, so I opted for the low angle perspective. Fortunately it was a dry day, and the sky was blue and clear. More like Spring than January really.

Photography life …

Spent Saturday re arranging the studio furniture, after reading another book on Feng Shui. Himself doesn’t believe in any of that, so didn’t want to know the reason for moving the desk, but basically I wanted to face my best direction. Handily this also meant I am no longer sat in a draft, and can see who is at the door.

Sunday I sent out the latest edition of my online newsletter - 8 tips for energising your office, plus a competition to win a limited edition print, and my latest picture of the month. You can view your copy here & subscribe to future editions by following the link in the newsletter. I tried a new layout this month - let me know what you think.

The revised website is progressing, and I am looking forward to seeing the finished thing and getting all the new photographs up onto the site. Although that will be a job and half it should enable me to showcase more of my work.

I decided I would delve more into the world of concept photography, and have been researching ideas on business concepts that I could shoot myself. Images with people are hugely popular with buyers, so I will be roping my friends in, but also trying images that tell a story. A lot of the stuff I see available is a departure for the style I normally shoot, and I guess the challenge will be to adapt the style to create successful imagery. Initially I will stick to subjects I know.

Red roses handmade card

Red roses handmade card, originally uploaded by BlueEyesPhoto.

Valentine’s day is on my mind, because I have a press release to issue, and because I have been receiving orders for this handmade card from my customers.

This shot was taken in the studio, aided by a red background, and I especially like the roses. They were beautiful, lasted ages and slowly relaxed their petals revealing lots of layers.

Castle Stalker, Scotland

Castle Stalker 0156, originally uploaded by BlueEyesPhoto.

Shot at dusk - hence the blueish light, this was one of those locations that changes everytime you visit. The water was high, and the incoming tide was changing the composition.

Initially I didn’t realise this, it was only when I’d reviewed a few shots I realised the grass was disappearing!

It looks calm, but there was a bitter wind blowing.

Decided I need some colour in my life as it’s all very dull at the moment.
Spring bulbs will be here soon, assuming my neighbours cat hasn’t dug them all up.

New Year, new challenges

The weather is wet and dull, and I am keeping busy with editing all the work I still have to upload to my picture libraries. Quite good really as I get to re live all my travels for a second time. For some reason I am very driven to get this back log cleared. Let’s hope it lasts till the end!

I also subscribe to a on line discussion forum for photographers - mostly editorial stock photographers, and had gotten so behind that I had 2,700 messages to read. I have now read about half, and it really is a fascinating resource - in that it sparks ideas for me, and makes me want to shoot stuff different from what I have so far done. I think in the beginning I got too focused on finding my style that I now need to go and try new subject matter, and see what happens. I even kept some of the Christmas decs back so that I had some props to play with. Might set myself a theme for each month …. so many ideas buzzing.

I have a feeling 2006 is going to be a very good year.
