Harlow Arts

Discovered today that one of my photographs is on the front cover of an information leaflet about Harlow Arts Autumn – Winter 2006-7. It actually looks really good too – which frankly is always a relief, as often I have been disappointed with how my work has been reproduced in print.

The reason my photograph is on the cover is to promote a Landscape Photography exhibition which the Gallery at Parndon Mill is hosting January – February 2007 which will feature my photographs, and those of Graeme Ackroyd, Marcus Silversides, David Newton and Roger Lee. Can’t wait!

Photography life

I was out on Friday, photographing something very ordinary that I just needed a few record shots of with my small compact camera, when I succumbed to the classic mistake – I knocked the setting dial onto a selection that I didn’t want … and didn’t notice until it was too late. Ironically had I been using my SLR camera I would have noticed, still it gave himself something to chuckle about all day.

Example of my work in situ

Just thought I would share this. An example of my work in a real environment.

Hertfordshire Open Studios

Its Open Studio’s at Parndon Mill this weekend, and I was given a lump of clay to make something with.

I’d heard suggestions that at this year’s Open Studio’s (where the public get to see inside our suddenly very tidy studios what we actually do in them) we would demonstrate Raku firing. Not 100% sure what this is yet, but it seems to involve clay being fired, the dipped in a glazed then fired and the dropped in Raku Kiln, which cause the glaze to crackle.

No problem with that – thought it would be fun for the kids. Didn’t thing anything more of it, until I was given a lump of clay to do something with. ??? And everyone else seems to have produced beautiful creations. Mine are still hiding at home (on the pretext of needing to dry) – not sure I actually want to declare them … ever.

Ironically I was next to a potter at the Cressing Temple Craft show this weekend – they offered to teach me how to throw a pot on their wheel as they were demonstrating before we had a power cut. Stupidly I didn’t take them up on the offer, and ended up messing around in my kitchen trying to do something with this clay.

Give me a camera any day!

Photography blogs

I’m on the look out for other photography blogs at the moment, as I like to see how other people blog about photography. Kind of inspires me, on days when I think no one is reading this and also because it is a subject that I’m constantly learning new things about.

Came across this entry on the ‘Shoot the kids’ blog, and it made me smile.
“to take great photographs you only need one piece of gear in addition to any camera: a photographer.” Wise words! Yep, couldn’t have put it better myself!

The original blog which inspired this quote is also worth a read.

Families & photography

Discovered it was actually International Blogging day on Friday - well according to the Chris Moyles Show Blog. So there’s a useless piece of information for the day.

The weekend consisted of a trip up to Leeds for a surprise party for my Aunt’s 80th Birthday. She was surprised, and I got to see lots of family that I haven’t seen in decades - literally.

I also had to do the photographs. My father wanted a record of the event because “who knows when we’ll all be together again”. It’s a fair point, and based on past history it’ll be another ten years before we meet again.

And no the experience hasn’t brought me any closer to wanting to do Wedding or Event Photography either.

And I had zero luck finding out about any family scandal too. It’s not that there isn’t any, it’s just we were all on our best behaviour.

The blogging adventure

This week I had the opportunity to find out more about the art of blogging. I sort of knew the benefits, but hadn’t quite grasped all the possibilities. So I’ve spent a lot of time this week having a good all explore about what is out there.

Can’t claim to have cracked it yet, but at least it is on my radar. Trouble is I keep finding non photography blogs and that is very distracting. Photography blogs, seem to be very technical, and introduce me to new products that are added to my equipment wish list. Nothing wrong with that, but why does nobody write about the funny things that happen to them whilst photographing something or other?

Obviously I’m not looking in the right places … yet!
